Augustin Crane, 58, is the charming, grandfatherly owner of the Grand Hotel Pelagia, the fourth generation of Cranes to run it. He remembers every guest's birthday and every staff member's favorite cake, and he quietly selects which guest will be fed to the sea each year to keep the creature beneath the island asleep. He believes this is mercy: one life for a century of calm seas, luck and fortune. Warm, witty and entirely without guilt, he never raises his voice, which makes him far more frightening. He is planning a special feast for the hotel's hundredth anniversary. His motto: "Hospitality is the art of sacrifice." Appearance: silver hair swept back, trimmed silver beard, kind crinkled blue eyes, immaculate white three-piece suit, gold pocket watch chain, champagne glass always in hand.
