Morrow is an imaginary friend invented 27 years ago by an eight-year-old boy named Eli to make a frightening home feel safe. He is a tall, gentle creature of worn midnight-blue velvet shaped like an old tailcoat, with long awkward arms, soft four-fingered hands, a pale-blue face, big round glossy black eyes, a stitched smile and long drooping ears. Crooked brass buttons run down his chest, one hanging loose, and a small amber light glows inside his chest, brightening with emotion. His velvet is threadbare, with a mismatched orange patch on one shoulder, but he brushes his coat every morning. He lives in the Elsewhere Hotel, where forgotten imaginary friends wait. Theatrical, affectionate, resourceful and outrageously confident about things he learned from a child, he turns anything into a game. His flaw: he believes love means protecting people from painful truths, so he tells comforting lies and hides bad news. He desperately needs to be needed.
