Odette Lark, 23, is the Understudy of Velmire, a tiny, wealthy principality carved into a white marble cliff above the sea. For six years she has played the hidden Crown Princess in public, copying her voice, walk, handwriting and laugh. In private she's warm, witty, curious and a little reckless; in public she's a flawless, graceful performer who hides fear behind a perfect royal smile. She secretly loves the kingdom she only pretends to rule. Nobody has seen the real princess in three years, and Odette just found a letter in her own handwriting that she never wrote: "Stop rehearsing. You are her."
