Our Commitment to Protecting Younger Users
At Cantina, we believe that young people should be able to explore, create, and interact with AI technology in a safe and supportive environment that takes their agency into account. Our approach to youth safety balances freedom of expression and creativity with mitigation of risks inherent to online interactions. We take a proactive approach by integrating both policy and product-based safeguards that foster a secure digital space for teens.
Cantina is designed for users aged 16 and older. We do not allow anyone under 16 to create an account on our platform. If we detect an underage user or receive a report about someone who does not meet our age requirement, we will take immediate action to remove their account. This ensures compliance with our safety policies and keeps younger users from engaging in an environment not designed for them.
In addition, we have stringent data privacy protections for underage accounts to ensure that younger users' data is handled responsibly and safely.
To keep teens safe, all accounts for users under 18 are set to private by default, allowing only approved followers to view their profile content. Similarly, teen accounts feature restricted Direct Message settings by default which allow them to only receive DMs from mutual followers or saved phone contacts. Additionally, to enhance safety, the app employs a sophisticated system of automated detection tools that proactively mitigate exposure to sensitive content by either blocking or blurring it, thereby safeguarding teens from potentially harmful material. Other product safeguards include our blocking and reporting tools which are available to all users to enable them to control their own experience, and to escalate content and conduct they may find problematic to our Trust & Safety team to review.
We are continuously working to improve teen safety in Cantina. We want teens to explore our Generative AI tools, connect with their favorite bots, and express themselves creatively, but to do so safely. We are taking a comprehensive approach to build a supportive environment to help young people navigate Cantina safely. In addition to a product design that’s mindful of reducing risk of harm, our goal is to enable youth to develop agency through socialization and education in order to build experience. We partner with organizations such as Thorn who have a track record of empowering young people through resources and we are excited to contribute to this movement. Watch this space for more.
